Of all the islands Scotland has to offer, Skye is particularly magical. Not only is it home to all the natural wonders that outdoorsy folk love (beaches, mountains, forests, oh my!), but it is also rife with mystical Gaelic mythology that will enchant even the most sceptical of souls.

Because of Scotland’s leniency on wild camping laws, sleeping under the stars is certainly an option, but we will warn you now – those north-westerly winds sure have a bite to them!

With this in mind, accommodation with a slightly sturdier roof than mesh or tarp may be in order! We’ve put together a list of the best places to stay on the Isle of Skye.

FAQs

Where is the best part of Skye to stay?

There is no shortage of beautiful places to stay on the Isle of Skye, but depending on the type of transportation you need for getting around, Portree has the most amenities and public transport links (if you’re not planning on hiring a car).

Where is the best base to explore the Isle of Skye?

Again, Portree can be a good shout, owing to the accommodation options and shops, meaning everything you need after a long day exploring is right there on your doorstep.

What is the most beautiful part of the Isle of Skye?

It is hard to pinpoint one particular area that is distinguished for its beauty above everywhere else, but we have a soft spot for The Quiraing, which is a landscape formed of the UK’s largest landslide, and is particularly scenic (and a great place to watch the glowing sunrise/set).

Should I stay in Inverness or Portree?

That entirely depends on the type of vacation you favour. If cocktail bars and vibrant nightlife is your preference, Inverness is the obvious choice. However, if something more quiet and nature-based (plus with a beach or two in the vicinity) is your cup of tea, we recommend Portree.
